Food & Accommodations

Food

Our intention is to provide healthy food that is appealing to children and adults of varying ages and food preferences. Most days, the menu will feature a light vegetarian lunch, as we imagine people might not enjoy a heavy or hot meal during the heat of the day.  Dinners will be more substantial, with meat and vegetarian options. Fresh salad is a part of every lunch or dinner when there is no raw vegetable option, and vegan options are available with most meals. In addition, light snacks will be provided in mid-morning and mid-afternoon for kids of all ages.  You can download a PDF of the menu here.

We intend to provide as much local and organic produce as is affordable, use whole grains whenever possible, and accommodate a wide variety of dietary preferences. Please consider bringing any supplemental, special or favorite foods for yourself and/or your children if you believe your needs and preferences won’t be adequately met by what we offer.  We ask you to keep in mind that refrigerator and freezer space is limited, with priority access for people with dietary restrictions.

While our intention is that kids will eat the same food offered to adults, we understand that feeding some children could be a challenge. To make this easier, we offer peanut butter and jelly make-your-own sandwich fixings for lunch and offer child's dinner entree on most evenings. When the adult dinner entree is considered sufficiently “kid-friendly,” there is no child option.  Prior to the camp, parents will have the opportunity to request the child dinner option for all days, no days, or on selected days.  On days you do not select the child option, we assume your child(ren) will eat the adult entree.

Meal cleanup is a shared responsibility, with each family washing their own dishes. We may also occasionally ask participants to volunteer in the kitchen to support meal preparations and/or clean-up.  Please bring enough cloth napkins for the week, as well as plates, bowls, cups, and utensils for all your eaters.  If you believe this will be a hardship due to your travel situation, please This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. We are happy to consider any suggestions or requests about the food service.  Please keep in mind that the earlier you This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , the easier it will be for us to address your request.

Accommodations

cabin

The cabin camps at Prince William Forest Park are rustic forest retreats constructed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).  Family HEART Camp takes place in Cabin Camp 2 (Camp Mawavi - click the link to see a map of the camp), located in the southwestern part of the park. The camp is organized into four "units" of about ten cabins grouped around a central meeting space and bathroom with hot showers and flush toilets.  Each family is quartered in a private four or six bed cabin equipped with single cots and mattresses.  The cabins do not have air conditioning.  For more information about Cabin Camp 2, click the Cabin Camp 2 link on the Logistics Menu to the left, or click here.  To see a slideshow of pictures of Cabin Camp 2, click on the picture above.

Climate

We understand that some participants may be concerned about spending a week in Virginia in July, in a camp without air conditioning.  We offer the following suggestions to help you enjoy the warm weather at Family HEART Camp:

  • Take a swim in the lake during the hottest part of the day.
  • Relax in a shady spot and enjoy the breeze passing through the camp.
  • Bring a personal fan and spray bottle to create your own air conditioning.

You might also consider that air conditioning in private homes was not common until the 1950's, and remains a rarity in much of the world.  This could be considered an opportunity to connect with what it might be like to live in a less developed part of the world, or to experience life as it may have been in a previous era.  However you approach this experience, you will likely appreciate your AC a lot more!
